Protein
So how much protein do you really need? Unlike carbohydrate and fat, the body cannot really store dietary protein. However, it needs a minimum amount of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) daily to prevent breakdown of tissue proteins, and this adds up to about 1/2 gram of protein per pound of body weight (0.68 - 0.91 g/pound for weightlifters and athletes). For example, a athletic man weighing 155 pounds will need approx. 125 grams of high quality protein to maintain health. Since the body cannot digest 125 grams of protein in one setting, the key is to spread your protein intake throughout the day.
